How Reeve Waud Went from a $5,000 Startup to Managing Billions

0

The founding story of Waud Capital Partners has the kind of modesty that rarely gets attention in the private equity world. In 1993, Reeve Waud started his firm with just $5,000 and no outside investors. There was no splashy launch, no first-day press coverage. There was simply a plan, a work ethic, and a belief that the right partnerships could produce meaningful returns.

But even before that, Reeve made what he might consider an equally important decision. Five years earlier, on August 20, 1988, he married Melissa Ann Wheeler at the First Church of Round Hill in Greenwich, Connecticut. Both were Middlebury College graduates, class of 1985. As documented in www.nytimes.com/1988/08/21/style/melissa-wheeler-weds-r-b-waud.html, as their 38th anniversary approaches, the personal and professional timelines of Reeve’s life have a striking parallel: both are stories of starting small and building something that lasts.

A One-Person Operation

Before founding his own firm, Reeve worked at GTCR and in the venture capital group at Salomon Brothers. Those roles gave him a foundation in deal-making and industry analysis, but the decision to go out on his own was a significant leap. Working from Lake Forest, Illinois, he began as a deal-by-deal investor. The the firm’s first fund didn’t close until 1999, raising $100 million.

Since then, the firm has grown steadily. Today, Waud Capital Partners manages roughly $4.6 billion in assets and has completed upward of 480 investments. More details are available at fintool.com/app/research/companies/ACHC/people/reeve-b-waud.

Building Acadia Healthcare

One of the clearest illustrations of Reeve Waud’s investment approach is Acadia Healthcare. Waud Capital formed the company in late 2005 to acquire and operate a national network of behavioral health facilities. By 2011, Acadia had completed a merger with PHC, Inc. and become a publicly traded company. It has since grown into the largest stand-alone behavioral health provider in the United States, with a network spanning more than 250 locations.

The creation of Acadia followed the same pattern that has guided Waud Capital from the beginning: find the right operators, provide the capital and support they need, and let the business grow. Reflecting this approach, Waud Capital’s appointment of experienced healthcare executives demonstrates its people-first philosophy. It’s a formula that has worked across dozens of investments over three decades.

The Personal Side of the Story

What often goes unmentioned in profiles of private equity leaders is the personal stability that supports years of high-pressure decision-making. For Reeve Waud, that stability has come from his marriage to Melissa, a fellow Middlebury graduate whose family roots stretch from Greenwich to Switzerland. Their wedding, officiated by the Middlebury College president, set the stage for a life built on shared values and mutual support. The the Chicago Tribune report from September 1988 documents this moment.
